Then and Now with Marcello Coradini at the Annual AAUW Anacortes Scholarship Fundraiser Tea Planetary scientist Dr. Marcello Coradini is a physicist who spent 27 years with the European Space Agency (ESA), which has its headquarters in Paris. He got his start with the agency through his work on the Giotto mission to Halley’s Comet, the first mission to approach a comet and photograph its nucleus. ESA has conducted more than 20 space exploration missions, all of which have been successful. Coradini is most proud of the 2003 Mars Express obiter mission, which is still on-going. Coradini will be the guest speaker at the annual AAUW Scholarship Fundraiser Tea, which will be on Saturday, March 30, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Anacortes Senior Center, 1701 22nd Street. Tickets are $15.00 each and are available from AAUW members and at the door on the day of the event. Tea, coffee, and delicious homemade sweets and savories will be served, and themed gift baskets will be offered as drawing prizes. The public is invited. Coradini and his wife Karen McBride, also a Mars expert, had planned to give a joint program at the fundraiser, but a scheduling conflict makes it impossible for her to be in Anacortes for the event. The couple met in 2009 in Holland, where Coradini had scheduled a meeting of planetary scientists to discuss a European-US collaborative project. McBride was a participant in this project. After his retirement from the ESA and her decision to take early retirement, the couple were looking for a permanent new home. Their first trip to Anacortes was in 2015, to visit a good friend of McBride’s. By their third visit here, they had decided to move to Anacortes and today make their home in the Cooper Pond area. Although retired, the couple still work on Mars projects, which includes a recent paper written by Coradini and his Italian co-workers and published in Science, on the finding of liquid water underground on Mars. To further the theme of “Then and Now” the event will feature some of the Anacortes branch’s scrapbooks, most of which were compiled by long-time member Pat Bell, and which feature the history of the organization’s contributions to the Anacortes area since the local branch was founded in 1956. The winners of AAUW’s 2018 scholarships will be honored guests. Last year’s winners were Wendy Stavig, who was awarded a $2,000.00 scholarship, and Abby Lindberg, Ana Fakkema Kidder, and Hannah Kaleel, who each received a $1,000,00 scholarship. The American Association of University Women’s mission is advancing gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. Since the local branch was started in 1956, it has given more than $75,000.00 in scholarships to local women.
