Competitive Scottish Highland Dancing returns to Anacortes for the Celtic Arts Championship on February 18, 2012. Sponsored by the Celtic Arts Foundation and the Clan Heather Dancers; world-class dancers compete at Brodniak Hall.
Highland dancing is often described as the world's most sophisticated folk dance form. Open championships are the highest form of competition for the elite dance sport where intricate and athletic steps are performed to live bagpipe music. Competitions include traditional Highland and national dances of Scotland and contemporary choreography. Male and female dancers perform in brilliant - colored tartan kilts.
Many local Highland dancers participate in the event at Brodniak Hall. Competitions are for ages four to adult and from beginner to premier levels.
Championships are santioned by the Scottish Offical Board of Highland Dancing; the world-wide governing body of Highland dance based in Scotland. Championships are open to dancers performing at the highest level of competitive dance called "premier". There are currently 13 open championships in the United States; two of these are organized by Heather Richendrfer through the Celtic Arts Foundation.
Admission to the Celtic Arts Championship is: $6.00 adults, $4.00 students and senior citizens. Competiton start time is 9:00 a.m. with beginner competitors.
